Road bike in Valtellina

We organise road and mountain bike tours

The Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo Passes – for cyclists there is no better way to escape the daily routine.
Maybe not everyone knows that the Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo passes are in the Alta Valtellina; these legendary climbs entered into the history of cycling thanks to the Giro d’Italia, which since the 1950s has made them famous. Coppi, Bartali, Koblet, Hinault, Gaul, Pantani and Basso, Nibali and Contador are just some of the champions who have forged their careers on our mountains. But the area isn’t just made up of legendary ascents for enthusiasts with professional training; there are other less demanding routes available, like the Sentiero Valtellina, a 150km cycle path which crosses the floor of the Valtellina through orchards and historic villages.

Take on the mountains

Some more racing bike routes:

  • The Poschiavo valley including the Bernina and Forcola passes
  • The Livigno valley including the Foscagno and Eira passes..

The valley floor is easily reached from Santa Caterina, from where the 150km Sentiero Valtellina (Valtellina cycle path) unwinds among orchards and vineyards for a relaxing way to discover some wonderful scenery.

Alberto, the owner of Hotel Vedig and cycling enthusiast, says:
I wanted to offer some technical data, and maps of the climbs around the local area, and suggest tours from Santa Caterina; some incredible routes which will provide some unforgettable moments, and if you like... I will accompany you along the way and share your passion for cycling.

Road bike climb:

› Passo Stelvio
http://www.bikemap.net/route/915306

It’s 1953. The “Campionissimo” Fausto Coppi leaves Koblet behind along the Stelvio road, wins the legendary “maglia rosa” (the pink jersey of the leader) and keeps it all the way to Milan.

Coppi is one of the many champions who have made the history of Passo Stelvio. These great champions have been living moments of glory and suffering along its curves for many years. Cycling up this climb makes you feel the magic of those legendary races...the smell of sweat, the screams of the supporters, the horns of the flagship vehicles...it’s all like a movie in your mind while the weariness makes you dizzy. The only certain thing is that once you reach the top all your efforts are well rewarded.

Difficulty: three wheels (difficult)
Distance from the hotel: 12 km
Total distance: 21.5 Km
Departure: 1225 mt
Arrival: 2758 mt
Average gradient: 7,1 %
Maximum gradient: 9.5 %

› Passo Gavia
http://www.bikemap.net/route/915314

June 5, 1988. “So I’m on my way down, I don’t care about the race I don’t care about anything, I’m pissing and moaning and grumbling, done asking God to come help me and I’ll make a deal with the devil if he shows up!”

Andy Hampsten chose these words to describe that memorable stage when he raced under a heavy snowfall, won the “maglia rosa” and, later, the Giro D’Italia. The weather conditions were prohibitive that day but the heroism of the cyclists who faced the climb in spite of the snowstorm gave the opportunity to write another page of history.
Starting from Santa Caterina, Passo Gavia is a piece of cake but you need to take it seriously; at Ponte dell’Alpe the gradient increases, so it gets harder to breath, also because of the thin air. Once you get to Berni hut it becomes easier but the constant wind makes it difficult to cycle. If you still have legs you can go down the other side of the mountain and face the climb from the much more difficult side.

Difficulty: two wheels (medium)
Distance from the hotel: 0 Km
Total distance: 13.5 km
Departure: 1734 mt
Arrival: 2618
Average gradient: 6,5 %
Maximum gradient: 11 %

› Passo Mortirolo
http://www.bikemap.net/route/915330

Giro d’Italia 1994. Marco Pantani, the famous cyclist called “il Pirata”. 43 minutes and 53 seconds. This is the time it took him to face Passo Mortirolo.

Passo Mortirolo is not only a climb, it is like a blade that cuts your legs meter after meter. It is like a cheeky child who makes fun of you. Passo Gavia and Passo Stelvio are well known for the length of their routes and their altitude but they give you the possibility to take breath while Passo Mortirolo is totally different. The gradient along the bends increases, the breath gets shorter and the temperature can be really hot. 12 km of no rest and things become easier only once you approach the final part, when you can finally enjoy the taste of victory.

Difficulty: five wheels (“Horse” category)
Distance from the hotel: 45 km
Total distance: 12,4 km

Arrival: 1855 mt
Average gradient: 10,5 %

› Bormio 2000
http://www.bikemap.net/route/915337

This is a less known climb and one of the Giro d’Italia stages in 2004, the year when Damiano Cunego won the “maglia rosa”. The most challenging climb is concentrated in the first few kilometers and once the village of San Pietro has been left behind the road is not steep even though it keeps climbing up to 700 meters gradient.

Difficulty: two wheels (medium)
Distance from the hotel: 12 km
Total distance: 9,8 km
Departure: 1225 mt
Arrival: 1938 mt
Average gradient: 7,50 %
Maximum gradient: 12 %

› Torri di Fraele
http://www.bikemap.net/route/915402

This is an easy climb that leads to the Torri di Fraele, in Valdidentro. The gradient and the type of territory represent a good opportunity to test your condition before you face more difficult climbs (Gavia, Stelvio, Mortirolo). Once you get to Torri di Fraele you can enjoy a wonderful view of Valdidentro and the valley of Bormio

Trekking & nordic walking

Those who climb higher see further; those who see further dream longer longer.

Everything seems magnified from the top of a mountain - time, space, sensations; the mountains can transport us to another dimension, allow us to see the world from another perspective and let us understand just how beautiful our planet still is. No matter how much mankind has done to destroy it, the Earth remains the most changeable yet extraordinary work of art we have to admire.
From above this work of art provokes sensations and emotions which are less perceptible from below; and it is at over 2,000m above sea level that the world opens to our gaze as if in a dream.
You don’t need to be at the peak of physical fitness to enjoy all this; walk slowly, let the horizon gradually open before your eyes and step by step lose yourself in the landscape.
Throughout the Stelvio National Park paths and mule tracks allow you to safely and easily reach areas of rare beauty where you can go hiking or Nordic walking; we are happy to suggest some of the best places to go.

Food & Wine

We love our local area, our roots and history, and we believe that part of this love is due to the gifts that the area gives us every day.

Although not blessed with the ideal geographical location in terms of farming, the Valtellina nonetheless has managed to get the most out of its land by cultivating crops like buckwheat, (one of the main components of dishes like pizzocheri and sciatt), making bresaola (cured beef) and last but by no means least, through its wine, which in its robust flavour transmits the toil and sacrifice that winemakers face when cultivating vines in a hostile and sometimes brutal environment.

Our kitchen, headed by our chef’s, offers a voyage of discovery through our flavours and our history.
Let Alberto guide you in your choice of wine, and add a touch of magic to your journey.
